Spaghetti Bolognese

Ingredients

  • 1 package spaghetti
  • 1 medium white onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 1 medium carrot, finely diced or grated
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 200 g tomato paste (or a jar of ready tomato sauce for a shortcut)
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 tsp shawarma spice mix
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • Salt to taste
  • A little olive or canola oil for frying

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat a wide pan or pot with a little oil.

  2. 2

Add the onion, carrot and celery and saute for 4-5 minutes until golden and slightly softened.

  3. 3

Add the garlic and saute for about 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Season with the shawarma spice, paprika and salt and stir into the vegetables.

  5. 5

Add the ground beef, stir and cook until it breaks apart and changes color.

  6. 6

Add the tomato paste and water, stir and cook over medium-high heat for 10-12 minutes, until the sauce reduces and thickens.

  7. 7

Meanwhile, bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions.

  8. 8

Drain the pasta, toss with the sauce and serve hot.
